What should I know about Periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is an inflammation caused by plaque that forms on your teeth. Periodontitis can affect the surrounding area of the tooth. This could range from a simple gum inflammation to a serious disease. In more advanced stages, the surrounding structures become affected and can be destroyed.

Types of periodontal disease

Gingivitis

Mild gum inflammation is identifiable when the gums become red and bleed easily because of plaque buildup around the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film composed of bacteria from sugars in food, this requires daily removal from good brushing and flossing habits. Plaque that stays on your teeth can harden under your gumline into tartar which can only be removed by a dentist or hygienist.

Periodontitis

When gingivitis is left untreated, it turns into periodontitis. The longer that plaque and tartar remain on your teeth the more they irritate your gum. Your body’s immune system starts fighting the plaque and bacteria, but they continue growing and spreading below the gum line. Eventually, your gums and the tissue around the teeth are destroyed and your teeth have to be removed.

Risk Factors

-Poor oral care habits.

-Crooked teeth that are difficult to clean.

-Smoking or chewing tobacco.

-Heart disease (oral bacteria affect the heart when they enter the bloodstream)

-Diabetes: People with diabetes are more likely to develop a periodontal disease because of increased sugar levels in the body which make infections more difficult to control.

Signs and symptoms

-Unexpected bleeding while brushing and flossing

-Redness and pain in the gums

-Bad breath

-Loose teeth which may shift in position because the bone tissue gets destroyed.
