Getting your teeth professionally whitened is a fantastic way to brighten your smile and boost your confidence. However, the days immediately following your whitening treatment are critical for maintaining your results. The foods and drinks you consume can significantly affect the longevity and brightness of your newly whitened teeth. Dr. Shervin Louie, who has been proudly serving patients in Los Angeles, Larchmont Village, and Hollywood for over 30 years, offers the following advice on what to avoid post-whitening.
After a whitening session, the enamel becomes slightly more porous and susceptible to staining. During this window—usually the first 24 to 72 hours—your teeth are more likely to absorb pigments from certain foods and drinks. These dark beverages are known for staining teeth. Even if you normally use a straw, it’s best to skip them entirely for at least two days after your appointment.

Acidic Foods
Citrus fruits and vinegar-based dressings can increase tooth sensitivity and enamel erosion, making teeth more vulnerable to discoloration.
Colored Sweets and Popsicles
Candies and frozen treats with artificial dyes are another major no-go. They can quickly alter the appearance of your whitened smile.
